Key West: Where to Stay

Parrot Key Hotel & Resort

Parrot Key Hotel & Resort

After combing travel sites for accommodations in Key West, my friend Kelly and I were confused about where to stay to say the least. The island has an assortment of B&Bs, resorts, hotels, condos and rental homes. The Sassy Writer, the world’s biggest Key West fan, recommended Parrot Key Hotel & Resort, and we’re so glad we listened.

The boutique hotel is an adorable arrangement of condos and town homes nestled in a luscious garden right on a lagoon. The garden surrounds 4 saltwater pools with comfy lounge chairs and umbrellas, showers and possibly the nicest bathrooms I’ve ever seen. What’s more, the first and largest pool adjoins a cafe where you can get a different kind of umbrella in your choice of island drink, not to mention a hearty breakfast and lunch. I had the most delicious smoked fish dip with crackers in this outdoor bar.

The rooms were also brightly decorated and cozy. I adored the front porch, which made a great reading nook.

The parameter of the resort features a man-made beach if you’re itching to put your toes in the sand (although there is no water access) and a sunset pier. There’s also a watersport rental place at the hotel for small boat or jetski rentals.

If you’d like to rent a scooter or beach cruiser, the hotel staff is happy to help. Our beach cruisers were delivered to the hotel, and we were able to return them at the front desk.

As you emerge from the hotel, you’ll notice that there’s a Walgreens next door (though it’s hard to imagine this paradise being so close to the everyday world) and a bike path that leads to Duval Street. We weren’t very close to Old Town and Duval Street (about a 2-mile trek one way), but the beach cruisers made getting downtown quick. Of course, at night we didn’t want to get sweaty, so we had to take cabs. I would say the only drawback to Parrot Key is lack of proximity. However, that lack of proximity probably helped us get the quiet pool time that we needed to unwind.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone heading to Key West.
